Guwahati . Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday lauded the discovery of a new species of gecko, ‘Cyrtodactylus jayadityai’, calling it a proud moment for the state and the northeastern region. Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister said the discovery underlines the rich biodiversity of the region and reflects the growing capabilities of researchers working in the field of wildlife science and conservation. He said such discoveries not only add to scientific knowledge but also reinforce the need for continued ecological conservation efforts in the region.
“It is a proud moment for Assam and the Northeast. The discovery of a new species of gecko, ‘Cyrtodactylus jayaditya’ highlights our rich biodiversity and the growing strength of our researchers,” Sarma said in his post.
He further said that it is encouraging to see that conservation initiatives and scientific talent are working together to bring such important discoveries to the world.
According to him, this discovery further strengthens the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems, especially in biodiverse areas like Northeast India.
The newly identified species belongs to the genus Cyrtodactylus, commonly known as the ‘bent-toed gecko’. They are found widely throughout Asia and are known for their ecological diversity.
Scientists believe the identification of Cyrtodactylus jayadityai will help better understand the evolution and habitat specialization of the species in this region.
Experts have long recognized that the Northeast, due to its unique climate and geographical conditions, remains one of the most biologically diverse regions of India. New species of plants and animals are often found here. However, they also warn that increasing human activities and environmental degradation are threatening these fragile habitats.
The Chief Minister’s comments come amid a renewed emphasis on conservation policies and scientific research in Assam. The state government is promoting greater collaboration between educational institutions, conservationists and local communities.
Sarma stressed that such discoveries should inspire continued investment in research and conservation, so that the natural heritage of the region can be safeguarded for future generations.
