Central government's big decision: Registration of vehicles is now valid for 20 years

New Delhi. The central government has taken a big decision related to the registration of old vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified the Central Motor Vehicle (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, and has now increased the limit of registration of old vehicles from 15 years to 20 years. This order will be applicable from 20 August 2025. Under the new rules, now the vehicle owners will have to renew the fitness certificate only after the completion of 20 years. Earlier this imperative used to apply after 15 years.
Along with this, separate fees have been fixed for different categories for renewal of registration of vehicles more than 20 years old. A fee of Rs 2000 for motorcycle, Rs 5000 for three wheelers/quadricycles, Rs 10,000 for light vehicles and Rs 12,000 for other big vehicles have been fixed.
The government says that this step has been taken with the aim of relieving the vehicle owners and making the registration process more transparent.
