Kolkata . Hasi Rani Rath, mother of Chandranath Rath, who was Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant for many years, on Thursday claimed that she had to bear the brunt of her son’s significant contribution to Suvendu’s victory against then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Bhawanipur assembly seat in South Kolkata in the recently held assembly elections. He said that the inflammatory and vindictive statements made by Trinamool Congress leaders during pre-poll campaign rallies also became a major reason behind the tragic death of his son. His son was shot dead in Madhyagram in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday night. Besides being Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath was one of the important members of Adhikari’s core team managing his election campaign in Bhawanipur.
Rath’s mother told the media on Thursday afternoon, “My son was in charge of the election campaigns of Bhawanipur and Nandigram, where Suvendu Adhikari contested the elections simultaneously and won. Perhaps that is why my son has come under attack. Especially because of Mamata Banerjee’s defeat from Bhawanipur.”
He said, despite such a huge victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP leaders are continuously appealing to their workers to exercise restraint and not take the law into their hands. At the same time, TMC leaders had been continuously threatening dire consequences in pre-election rallies.
“They did the same thing to my son. My appeal to the new state government is to give strict punishment to my son’s murderers,” he said.
However, despite this he did not demand capital punishment for the murderers. She said, “I want the culprits to be punished. Since I am also a mother, I would not want the culprits to be hanged but they must be given life imprisonment. I request the incoming new government to ensure strict punishment to the culprits.”
