Debris collapses during slurry loading in Dhanbad colliery, four workers killed

In a horrific accident at the Munidih Coal Washery in the Western Jharia area of ​​Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Dhanbad, Jharkhand, four daily wage laborers were crushed to death due to debris collapse during slurry loading. The incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Saturday evening, when a group of 7 to 10 laborers were manually loading washed coal dust (slurry) into a truck at the loading point. Meanwhile, a huge pile of slurry fell on the workers, causing chaos and screams.
As soon as information about the accident was received, the local police, CISF and washery management team reached the spot and relief and rescue operations were started on a war footing. So far, bodies of three laborers have been recovered from the debris, while rescue operations are underway to find another missing laborer.
The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri (45) and Dinesh Bauri (52), residents of Gopinathdih, Deepak Bauri (50), resident of Samshikhara, and Moda Gop (59), resident of Rudi Kapuria. Sunita Devi of Gopinathdih had a narrow escape in this horrific accident, who managed to get out safely from the debris. The accident at this washery, established in 1983 and having a capacity of about 1.6 million tonnes per annum, has raised serious questions on the safety protocols and monitoring system.
Eyewitnesses allege that there was a severe lack of adequate security arrangements and monitoring by officials at the spot during risky work like slurry loading. At present, the police of Putki and Bhagabandh police stations including Munidih OP are busy in maintaining law and order on the spot, while after the accident, the family members are crying in bad condition and there is mourning in the entire area. –
