The scorching heat and humidity have made life difficult for people. Therefore, most people are preferring to stay indoors and run coolers, fans, air conditioners and refrigerators to get relief from the heat. Besides, they are also worried about rising electricity bills. However, lakhs of people who have opted for ‘PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme’ and have installed solar panels on their rooftops are enjoying the coolness without worrying about the bill, as this government scheme provides 300 units of free electricity.
What is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
PM Surya Ghar Yojana is a central government scheme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024. It not only provides 300 units of free electricity but also provides financial assistance to people to install solar panels on their rooftops. The government subsidizes the cost of solar panels depending on their capacity and your consumption needs. So far, around 27 lakh families are taking advantage of the scheme, and the government aims to provide electricity to 1 crore families through solar panels.
How much subsidy is available for a 3 kW panel?
As mentioned, the government gives different subsidies depending on the capacity of solar panels. Under this scheme, you can get solar panels installed on your rooftop with a capacity of 1 kW to 3 kW (or more). The estimated cost of installing a 3 kW solar panel is between ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh. The government provides a subsidy of ₹78,000, which is either deposited directly into your bank account or adjusted in your loan account. This reduces your out-of-pocket expenses and also gives you the benefit of free electricity.
Different states also provide additional subsidies under the Solar Mission. For example, in Uttar Pradesh, the government is offering an additional subsidy of ₹30,000 over and above the central subsidy for solar panel systems with a capacity of 3 kW or more. This increases the total subsidy from ₹78,000 to ₹1.08 lakh. If we talk about electricity consumption, if your consumption is between 0 to 150 units, then you can install a 1-2 kW solar panel system and get a subsidy of ₹ 30,000 to ₹ 60,000.
