Energy security in danger due to wrong foreign policy, government should prepare: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday expressed concern over India’s energy security. He warned that if adequate preparations are not made, the country may have to face serious challenges in the near future. He said ‘wrong’ foreign policy decisions have contributed to the current situation. He urged the government to take immediate action to protect the interests of the public.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said that he had sought permission to raise the issue of gas and LPG situation in the House, but he was not allowed to speak. He said that normally there is a process of seeking permission to speak… I had sought permission to make a statement about the situation of gas and LPG. This is the beginning. I wanted to speak about this, but it seems a new process has started – first the minister will decide, then I will speak, and then the minister will respond.
Expressing concern over increasing uncertainty in the energy sector, he warned that fuel supply could become a major issue.
“The bottom line is that gas is going to be a problem,” he said. Petrol is going to be a problem. All fuel will be a problem. Because our energy security is in danger. Wrong foreign policy has created this problem. We have to be ready for this. The government and Prime Minister Modi should start preparations. If not, it will affect crores of people of the country.
Rahul Gandhi also suggested that the issue is bigger than just whether some countries allow or restrict fuel supplies.
He said that this war is basically about the existing world order.
He further said that global geopolitical changes are creating uncertainty, which could impact the energy supply chain.
Gandhi said whether Iran will allow fuel or not is a very big issue… We are entering an unstable period. When you enter unstable times, you have to change your mindset. I am suggesting to the government that they should consider the possibilities and ensure that our people do not face any problems.
