Five militants of two banned organizations arrested in Manipur, weapons recovered

Imphal . Five militants of two banned outfits have been arrested from three different districts during the last 24 hours in a joint operation by security forces in Manipur. Besides, some arms and ammunition were also recovered. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. A Manipur Police spokesperson said that five militants of the banned People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak ​​(PREPK) and Kangleipak ​​Communist Party (KCP) were arrested from different places in Bishnupur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts. Many mobile phones and other items were seized from the militants. The arrested militants were involved in extorting donations from contractors, government employees, traders and common people.
Security forces also arrested a drug peddler named Suimi Awungshi (53), a resident of Kamjong district, from Imphal East district with one kilo of brown sugar. The estimated value of the drugs was Rs 20 lakh.
Large-scale intelligence-based combing, cordon and search operations are being conducted in Imphal Valley and hill districts to nab those involved in extortion and criminal activities in the state.
Security forces also recovered some arms and ammunition from Thoubal and Imphal East districts.
The recovered weapons included one SMG carbine, one .303 rifle, six different types of SBBL guns, three 12-bore guns, two modified .303 rifles, five pistols and two 36HE hand grenades. A large quantity of different types of ammunition has also been recovered from these two districts.
Central and state security forces are carrying out large-scale operations against terrorists, including search operations and area domination drives in outlying, mixed-populated and sensitive areas of the districts.
A total of 113 checkpoints/checkpoints have been set up in both valley and hill districts in Manipur to prevent illegal movement of enemy elements and suspicious vehicles.
Security forces are also providing escort to vehicles including trucks carrying essential goods on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37). To ensure safe movement of vehicles, tight security arrangements and convoy protection continue in sensitive areas.
