Dhaka, February 17 (). Diplomatic activities between India and Bangladesh remained intense on the occasion of the swearing-in ceremony of the new government in Bangladesh. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s Leader of Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman on the sidelines of the ceremony.

The Foreign Secretary congratulated Dr. Rahman for his new assignment and reiterated India’s continued support to Bangladesh. He said that India-Bangladesh relations are based on people-to-people ties and the scope of cooperation between the two countries is broad and people-centric.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also expressed hope of further strengthening the relations, citing the deep civilizational and historical ties between the two countries.

In this sequence, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met the newly appointed Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman. The meeting took place after the swearing-in ceremony of the new Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government.

Om Birla posted on

During the meeting, Birla congratulated Prime Minister Rahman on assuming office and also invited him to visit India. Both the leaders committed to work together for the welfare of the people of India and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riyaz Hamidullah also said in a joint statement on ‘X’ that Prime Minister Tariq Rahman sent good wishes for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the agenda of cooperation between the two countries will be people-centric and work together will be done to take mutual relations to new heights.

It is noteworthy that BNP President Tariq Rahman has been sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh after a decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary elections. With the formation of the new government, it is expected that there will be new momentum in bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
