An independent commission investigating alleged human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territory has said that Israel has committed ‘four acts of genocide’ in Gaza, while Israeli leaders have incited genocide. The Commission chief gave this information while presenting his latest report before the UN General Assembly committee on Tuesday. Navi Pillay, head of the independent commission, said the report’s findings are based on legal analysis conducted under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. They conclude that Israel is responsible for carrying out four genocidal acts in Gaza, which were carried out with the intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza. Tweet URL
“The Commission finds that the Israeli President, Prime Minister and former Defense Minister have incited genocide.” According to former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, Gaza has experienced cruel conditions that have continued for a long time and has been carried out in the most extensive attack against the Palestinian people in history. “The Gaza Strip has become a pile of rubble, and it is almost uninhabitable.” He said Israeli officials have publicly supported plans to expel the Palestinian population, build settlements and annex the territory. Although these policies have been put on hold because of the ceasefire, Israel It is clear from recent statements by officials that this intention still exists. This was Navi Pillay’s last report to the UN General Assembly. She has been the head of this independent, international investigative body since July 2021. According to the Occupied West Bank Commission of Inquiry, Israel has, since October 2023, adopted policies in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, that reflect its intention to forcibly displace Palestinians, expand the presence of Israeli Jewish citizens, and annex much of the West Bank. Under this, Israel is also directly or indirectly supporting those residents of settlements who resort to violence. Navi Pillay said that this is aimed at preventing the realization of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and a state, and to continue the occupation indefinitely. Emphasis on accountability She urged Member States to ensure justice and accountability by supporting the International Criminal Court and its investigations. Will have to go. At the same time, universal judicial jurisdiction will have to be used to prosecute suspects and people with dual citizenship. “It is a matter of pain for me that in my last report as head of this Commission, the multilateral system since the Second World War has failed to stop this genocide.” He appealed for truth and mutual reconciliation, saying that only through transitional justice can peace be given a chance to flourish. Urges a permanent ceasefire. Francesca Albanese, the independent human rights expert for the Palestinian territories, also addressed the UN General Assembly Committee, calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. She urged Member States to demand Israel’s withdrawal from all occupied territories and the removal of Israeli settlements. In addition, Special Rapporteur Albanese called for an end to all military, trade and economic relations with Israel. Said to suspend diplomatic relations until Israel ends this genocide, illegal occupation and apartheid. He also called for the prosecution and accountability of those involved in alleged crimes. “In this way, we will begin to honor the memory of the dead. And if the Security Council remains deadlocked, the General Assembly must act with greater determination than ever before, in solidarity with the cause of peace.” The Independent Human Rights Expert, or Special Rapporteur, is appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, who serves on a voluntary and unpaid basis. They do their work. They are not UN staff and they work independently of any government or organization.
