Patna. On the occasion of International Education Day and National Girl Child Day, a thought-provoking seminar on the topic “When education empowers girls, society is transformed” was organized at British Lingua, Boring Road intersection, Patna on Friday. Addressing the academicians, students, parents and civil society representatives on this occasion, eminent educationist, writer and social thinker Dr. Birbal Jha said that the key to India’s social and economic progress lies in the quality education of girls. Dr. Jha said, “Educating a girl child is not an act of mercy, but a determination for nation-building. When a girl child is educated, generations move forward with her.” Emphasizing on the broader purpose of education, he said that education should not be limited to literacy or employment only, but it should be a medium of dignity, self-confidence and decision-making ability. “Education is not just about degrees; it is about voice, choice and confidence. True education makes the girl a leader, not a follower.”
Dr. Jha said that despite the policy framework and constitutional protections, social mindset and structural barriers in many parts of the country still remain a hindrance in the full educational empowerment of girls. “The biggest challenge today is not just about opportunities, but about attitudes. We have to introspect whether we are really giving flight to our daughters or just loosening their shackles.”
Describing International Education Day and National Girl Child Day falling on the same day as symbolic, he said, “No education policy can be considered complete unless the girl child is at its centre.” He called upon teachers and educational institutions to promote quality education that develops communication skills, critical thinking, moral values and self-confidence, especially among the girl child. “
The question today is not whether we can educate girls or not, the real question is whether India can move forward without educating them?” The symposium concluded with a collective resolve that sustained and conscious investment in girls’ education is essential to building an inclusive, progressive and developed India.
