Ahmedabad. Due to heavy rains and strong winds, flood like situation was created in the villages of Gir Somnath and the sea also increased. Due to this, the district administration had to carry out several rescue operations, in which more than 250 people were rescued safely. Four people trapped in a flooded house were rescued and four fishermen whose boat was washed away in the sea were brought to safety. The biggest rescue operation was carried out in Gangda village, where around 250 people were evacuated to safe places after the embankment of Rupen river broke at around 1 am following heavy rains. According to the district administration, due to breach of embankment, flood water of the river entered ‘New Plot’ and ‘Untwala Road’ areas of the village, due to which houses were submerged in water and around 250 people were trapped.
Employees of the Mamlatdar office, Taluka Panchayat, police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) immediately started the rescue operation. Rescue teams evacuated residents to safe places – Gangda Primary School and Bapa Sitaram Ashram.
The administration said accommodation, food and sleeping arrangements were made for about 115 people, while the rest of the affected people went to live with their relatives or family members.
Officials said all the stranded people were evacuated safely and necessary relief arrangements were made for the homeless people.
In a separate incident, four people trapped in a flooded house were rescued after rain water entered low-lying residential areas in Sultanpur village of Una taluka during the night.
The district administration said that they had received information that four people were trapped after water entered the house.
Mamlatdar office and SDRF employees together conducted a rescue operation and rescued all four people present in the house safely.
The rescued people were taken to Sultanpur Primary School, where arrangements for their stay and sleeping were made.
The administration said that in view of the heavy rains, SDRF is on alert in the entire district and is working closely with local authorities.
Heavy rains and strong winds also affected the coastal areas of the district, where due to rough sea, many boats stopped at anchor were displaced from their place.
According to the administration, five-six boats and two-three small fishing boats that were anchored in the creek area near Syed Rajpara village in Una taluka were washed away into the sea. This happened due to the combined effect of strong winds, heavy rains and the strong flow of the river causing their anchors to be dislodged.
The Indian Coast Guard launched a rescue operation after officials realized that one of the drifting boats had four fishermen on board.
