Guwahati. Guwahati, the cultural capital of the North-East, is once again going to be drenched in the colors of literature, art and intellectual dialogue. The third edition of Pragjyotishpur Literature Festival (PLF) will be grandly organized from 14 to 16 November 2025. This three-day festival is not just a literary event, but a celebration of the glorious heritage of Assam and the Pragjyotishpur-Kamrup-Kamakhya civilization, which has enriched Indian cultural traditions for centuries. This festival, which is trying to find its roots in the ocean of knowledge of India, is being organized by Shankardev Education and Research Foundation on the theme of ‘Search of Roots’. Here writers, critics, artists, translators and readers from all over the country will come together on one platform, where the diversity of ideas, languages and arts will take the form of a vibrant celebration.
Confluence of literature, dialogue and tradition
The three-day long festival will include panel discussions, interactive talks, nature writing workshops, multilingual poetry readings and special sessions based on Assamese art traditions. According to the organizing committee, the focus this time is to bring out the ‘cultural soul of Assam’ from a new perspective.
Five major thematic discussions will be organized this year at the festival, which will outline the historical scope and current direction of Assamese literature and arts—
1. Evolution of Assamese performing arts: From Ankiya Bhavana to Bhravyman
Based on the stage history and traditional acting styles of Assam, this session will bring forward the confluence of tradition and modernity.
2. Assamese lyric literature: a journey from the 1990s to the contemporary era
An in-depth and interesting discussion on the major changes and new experiments in Assamese music-literature.
3. Assamese Language, Literature and Journalism: Development and Expansion
The discussion focused on the interrelationships, challenges and future prospects of language and journalism.
4. Translated Literature: Beyond the Limits of Language
A thoughtful session on the journey of Assamese literature to global expansion and reaching out to new readerships through translation.
5. The Creative World of Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya: An Exploratory Journey
An attempt to understand the contribution of Sahitya Akademi and Jnanpith award winning novelist Bhattacharya.
Special session dedicated to Kalaguru Rabha
A special session will be organized in the memory of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, who is called the soul of the cultural history of Assam. New perspectives will emerge regarding their art, music, social reform and cultural consciousness.
Confluence of multilingual poetry under the open sky
One of the most attractive presentations of the Mahotsav will be the ‘Open-Air Multilingual Poetry Session,’ in which poets from Assamese as well as Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Bodo, Karbi, Mishing, Nepali, Bengali, Rabha and Tiwa languages will bring together diverse cultural voices through their poems. This session will establish the multicolored identity of the North-East in its full glory.
Resolve to connect with your roots
According to PLF President Phanindra Kumar Dev Chaudhary, this literary festival is not just an event but “a cultural journey to reconnect with our civilization, language and history”. He says, “Today many educated people give less importance to their heritage and judge literature through the western lens. This is the reason why the sense of peace, dignity and sophistication of our ancient civilizations is getting blurred. PLF is an attempt to rekindle this consciousness.”
His hope is that PLF 2025 will redefine the heritage of Kamrup-Kamakhya civilization and become an inspiring platform for the new generation to understand and embrace their cultural roots.
This November literary festival in Guwahati is not just a festival of words, but a vibrant revival of a civilization. This confluence of diversity of thoughts, richness of languages and traditions of art will infuse a new energy not only in the literary scenario of Assam but of the entire country.
