New Delhi, May 18 (). Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PM Ulf Christerson exchanged special gifts in the presence of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore and the deep cultural and intellectual ties between India and Sweden.

The gift given by the Prime Minister of Sweden included a box containing two small ‘copies of aphorisms’ written by Tagore. It was accompanied by a short description and a photograph of Tagore taken during his visit to Uppsala University in Sweden in 1921. These original documents, recently discovered in the National Archives of Sweden, were written by Tagore during his visits to Sweden in 1921 and 1926.
Prime Minister Modi presented a collection of Tagore’s works to the Prime Minister of Sweden, along with a special handmade bag from Santiniketan. The bag features designs that were chosen by Tagore himself to promote local artisans. This bag symbolizes that art should not be limited to museums, but should become a part of everyday life.
Although Gurudev Tagore could not go to Sweden to receive the Nobel Prize in 1913, when he visited Sweden in 1921, he was welcomed by King Gustav V. These gifts reflect the deep cultural and intellectual ties between India and Sweden and pay tribute to Tagore’s enduring legacy. The exchange also coincided with the 100th anniversary of his historic 1926 visit to Sweden.
