Bobby Deol VFX: Yash Raj Films’ sizzling popcorn action entertainer ‘Alpha’ starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari is running successfully in theaters across the world and has earned a global gross of over Rs 92.75 crore so far.
While the audience is enjoying the high-octane action and thrilling story of the film, the most talked about aspect of the film has also become Bobby Deol’s extremely seamless and realistic de-aging. An important part of the film shows Bobby in his youthful form from his ‘Soldier’, ‘Gupt’ and ‘Barsaat’ era, which has greatly impressed the audience.
The visual transformation has been created by YFX Studios, the state-of-the-art VFX department of Yash Raj Films. This was developed not just for the sake of technical performance, but to make the story more emotionally impactful, so that the audience would feel as if they were actually watching the character live through that period of his life. True to director Shiv Rawail’s vision, YFX Studios used cutting-edge technology and meticulous artistic craftsmanship to create this impact.
Shiv Rawail says, “For us from the beginning, this visual effect was not just for show. For me, every creative decision should serve the story. The audience had to completely believe that they were seeing the character at a particular stage of his life. If this illusion did not feel natural, then the emotional impact would not have been the same. Our biggest challenge was to make the technology completely invisible, so that the audience’s attention was only on the story and acting, not on the effects.”
Bobby Deol, who experienced such technology for the first time, says, “It was truly a unique experience to see the years disappear from my face. I have played many types of characters in my career, but this happened for the first time. It made me realize how far filmmaking technology has progressed. But technology can help only to a certain extent. After all, it is the responsibility of the actor to portray the emotions of the character truthfully. This was the most exciting thing for me.”
YRF’s in-house YFX Studios played a major role in this achievement. Sherry Bharda, Head of YFX Studios and YFX Supervisor, says, “Today’s audiences are hyper-conscious, so visual effects must be nearly invisible. For the first time at YFX, we combined AI and VFX on such a large scale throughout an entire sequence. The task was extremely challenging due to the limited amount of suitable footage of Bobby Deol’s early days. Just making the face look youthful is not enough; small details like skin, wrinkles, eye expression are what make the illusion real. The problem of ‘dead eyes’ is common in AI de-aging, so we used a combination of AI and our artists’ expertise to maintain complete control over every frame. De-aging is not just about making someone look younger, but it is a big milestone for us.”
This de-aging work done at ‘Alpha’ is another significant achievement for YRF’s YFX Studios. This shows that the studio is continuously investing in world-class filmmaking technology and using every technological innovation with the aim of enhancing the story.
Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail, ‘Alpha’ stars Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. The film has currently been released successfully in theaters across the world.
