Washington. Preparations for the 12th International Yoga Day are in full swing in America. On this occasion, Indian Ambassador to America Vinay Mohan Kwatra said that yoga has now become an integral part of American society. He said that now a yoga studio can be found on “almost every street” in America. The Ambassador described it as a great heritage of India’s ancient civilization and said that its popularity is continuously increasing all over the world. “If you travel around Washington DC or anywhere in the US, you will find a yoga studio on almost every street,” he told . On the occasion of International Yoga Day, all diplomatic missions of India are preparing to organize large-scale programs in America. These programs will take place from Lincoln Memorial in Washington to Times Square in New York and Navy Pier in Chicago. This year’s theme is ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’ i.e. Yoga for healthy old age. Its aim is to connect people with yoga for physical health, mental peace and healthy lifestyle.
The Indian Embassy in Washington will organize the main event at the Lincoln Memorial on June 19. “Join us for the biggest yoga session of the year,” the embassy said, inviting people to join them.
Kwatra said that this day, celebrated every year, symbolizes that this ancient tradition of India has now been accepted all over the world.
He said, “The resolution of International Yoga Day was passed in the United Nations in 2014, declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day. This was the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which got the support of 175 countries.”
Describing Yoga as an important heritage of India, he said, “Yoga is not just an ancient tradition of India, but it is a great treasure of our civilizational heritage.”
He said that Prime Minister Modi also considers it a precious gift of ancient tradition.
Kwatra said, “Yoga has the ability to unite body, mind, thought and spirit.”
According to him, this is the reason why Yoga is connecting people all over the world and people of different cultures and religions are adopting it.
“Yoga connects very deeply within a person, and that is why it has transcended borders and spread all over the world,” he said.
Talking about this year’s theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging”, he said that it reflects yoga as a way to live a healthy, active and balanced life.
Padmashree HR Nagendra, who is considered the yoga guru of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will also participate in the Yoga Day programs this time. He will participate in several events in New York, including a big yoga event on June 21 in Times Square.
Consulate General of India in New York will organize ‘Mind Over Madness Yoga’ event in collaboration with Times Square Alliance. The session will be led by Ruchika Lal of Art of Living Foundation, while HR Nagendra will attend as the chief guest.
The United Nations General Assembly approved India’s proposal on 11 December 2014 and declared it as International Yoga Day. June 21 was chosen because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Since being celebrated for the first time in 2015, Yoga Day has grown into a major global event. Now every year millions of people around the world participate in it in collaboration with governments, institutions, schools, colleges and yoga organizations. It has become a huge symbol of India’s soft power and cultural identity.
