New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia from July 6 to 8 is an important step towards increasing cooperation and further strengthening the ‘Knowledge Partnership’. The partnership between India and Indonesia is no longer limited to just traditional relations, but is rapidly moving towards sharing technology, policy and new models of development. Indonesia today looks at India not just as a strategic partner but also as a reliable source of technology, policies and successful development models. India’s successful public policy models in areas such as food security, digital governance, health, agriculture and defense are now becoming an important example for Indonesia in its own development journey. Several Indonesian delegations have visited India to learn from India’s digital infrastructure and social welfare schemes. These include initiatives like India’s Public Distribution System, Rice Fortification Scheme, Fertilizer Subsidy Reforms and Agristack.
All of these models are becoming useful references for Indonesia, especially in terms of strengthening digital governance and social protection.
Indonesia is now taking advantage of India’s expertise in the field of digital payments. The proposed UPI-QRIS linking will enable seamless cross-border payments for travelers and merchants of both the countries. This initiative is expected to boost tourism, trade and digital commerce. Also, transactions will become faster, cheaper and easier.
Businesses from India trade or invest in Indonesia and about 1.7 million Indian tourists visit Bali and other Indonesian destinations every year. This UPI-QRIS facility can prove to be a big change for them.
India’s digital public infrastructure has also emerged as a major area of ​​cooperation. Indonesia Open Network (ION) is inspired by India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) model and aims to create an open and inclusive digital marketplace for Indonesia’s more than 65 million small, micro and medium enterprises.
The system is based on the 2.0 protocol and is expected to see its first live transaction during the Prabowo Summit on July 7.
India and Indonesia’s digital partnership is no longer limited to just sharing successful models, but is now moving towards creating next level digital infrastructure. Indonesia’s ambitious ‘Digital Nusantara’ initiative aims to create an integrated and interconnected national digital system and India’s technological expertise is becoming a vital partner in this journey.
India’s digital solutions like Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, e-KYC and ONDC are now proving useful in Indonesia’s digital transformation as well. This change is not limited to just technology adoption, but now points to deeper collaboration at the institutional level, where Indian companies are sharing experience in building secure digital systems at scale.
Indonesia now aims not only to use technology, but also to become a country that creates and exports digital solutions in the ASEAN region. India’s experience of the last decade is proving very useful in achieving this goal of Indonesia.
Cooperation between the two countries is also increasing in the financial markets. There are now discussions about using India’s expertise in AI-based market surveillance, digital investment platforms and technology-related capital market reforms. The way India has modernized its stock markets with the help of technology, it is now opening new avenues of cooperation with Indonesia.
Indonesia’s ambitious ‘Free Nutritious Meals’ program is inspired by India’s mid-day meal scheme. Similarly, Indonesia’s ‘Red and White Village Cooperatives’ initiative is being explored to complement India’s Jan Aushadhi model to provide affordable medicines and improve health services in rural areas. For this, the ‘Jan Aushadhi Scheme’ model is becoming an important example.
This partnership is now reaching the defense sector also. Indonesia is working with India on defense manufacturing, exchange of technology, military training and maritime security cooperation. India’s experience in indigenous defense production under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ is creating new opportunities for long-term cooperation in this sector. Self-reliant India is becoming an important foundation of this cooperation.
All these initiatives point towards a big change that India’s development journey is no longer limited to its own citizens, but it is now becoming a model for friendly countries as well. With the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia, this growing ‘Knowledge Partnership’ is becoming a strong foundation of the relationship between the two countries, creating new opportunities for innovation, economic development and long-term strategic partnership.
