Noida,. Noida Authority has taken major action in the case of death of a sweeper while cleaning the sewer line at T-point near Sector-93B and Village Gejha of Noida. The authority has terminated the services of the concerned Junior Engineer (JE), while the process of blacklisting the concerned contractor has been initiated. Apart from this, departmental action is also being taken against the contractor by filing FIR and against other responsible officials. However, this incident has once again raised questions on the claims of Noida Authority, in which it has been said that sewer cleaning will be done entirely through machines. According to the information given in the letter issued by the authority late last night, on July 14, 2026, the work of cleaning the deep sewer line was going on at the T-point near Sector-93B and Village Gejha in the jurisdiction of Water Block III. During this time, sweeper Shiva was working by going into the sewer manhole to open the blockage in the sewer line. It has been claimed in the information that the sweeper was wearing a safety belt, oxygen mask and other safety equipment. According to the authority, during cleaning, when the field staff tried to pull Shiva up after some time, he got entangled in the wires present inside the manhole. After this, with the help of local police and fire service, he was taken out and immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
After the incident, Noida Authority has started strict action against the concerned contractor M/s Shivji Constructions Company. According to the letter, action has been taken to register an FIR against the company, issue a notice to blacklist it, terminate the service of the concerned Junior Engineer (Contract) Rakesh Kumar, give an adverse entry to the concerned manager and issue a show cause notice to the senior manager. Apart from this, assurance has also been given to provide all possible assistance to the family of the deceased sweeper as per the rules.
However, this whole matter has raised many serious questions. In the last few years, many sanitation workers have lost their lives while cleaning sewers in Noida and NCR. Despite this, even today, at many places, sanitation workers have to work inside sewers. Whereas there are clear instructions from the Central Government and the Supreme Court that as far as possible, sewer cleaning should be done with machines and no person should be allowed to enter the sewer without adequate safety and necessary conditions.
Noida Authority has been continuously claiming that sewers are being cleaned in the city through modern machines, but the latest incident has raised questions on the actual status of these claims.
