New Delhi Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has recommended the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor to the Union Law Ministry. CJI Gavai is scheduled to retire on November 23. There is such a tradition regarding the CJI that about a month before his retirement, the Law Ministry asks the CJI to recommend the name of his successor. After this, the name of his successor is recommended by the CJI. After this it is almost decided who will become the separate Chief Justice of the country.

At present, Justice Surya Kant is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court. If he becomes CJI, he will be the 53rd Chief Justice of India. After the completion of the appointment process, Justice Surya Kant will take over as the 53rd Chief Justice of the country on November 24. He will hold this post till February 9, 2027.
Who is Justice Surya Kant?
Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962 in Hisar, Haryana. At present, he is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai. He graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in the year 1981. After this, he completed his law studies from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. In the same year, he started practice in the district court of Hisar. After just one year from here, he reached Punjab and Haryana High Court to practice.
Justice Surya Kant was appointed permanent judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004. After this, he was appointed Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on 5 October 2018. After staying here for almost a year, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.
