Washington. Britain’s King Charles III has appealed to further strengthen the friendship between America and Britain. He said that in view of the unrest and conflicts going on in the world today, it is very important for both the countries to work together. Speaking at a joint meeting of Congress, Charles said both countries face a time of great uncertainty, with conflicts ranging from Europe to the Middle East, the consequences of which are being felt across both societies. He also mentioned a recent violent incident near the Capitol and said that such acts of violence will never succeed. They reiterated our shared promise to preserve democracy and protect all our people from harm.
Charles described the US–UK relationship as rooted in shared democratic traditions, even if it emerged from early disagreements. “Actually, our countries naturally have similar mindsets,” he said.
King Charles III described the relationship between America and Britain as a partnership born of conflict, but a strong one. He linked these relationships to common legal and political foundations, including Magna Carta and English Common Law, which helped create American constitutional principles such as checks and balances.
Emphasizing the need to work together in the current global environment, King said, “The challenges we face are too great for any one country to face alone.” He appealed to both countries to strengthen their alliance instead of relying on past successes.
Regarding defence, Charles said that Britain is making the biggest continuous increase in defense spending since the Cold War. He cited growing security threats and pointed to deeper military and intelligence cooperation between the two countries.
“Our defence, intelligence and security relations are interconnected,” he said. Charles praised Ukraine’s continued support, saying it was needed to ensure a truly just and lasting peace. He stressed the importance of NATO’s role in collective security.
Emphasizing on economic ties, he mentioned the annual trade of $430 billion and $1.7 trillion in mutual investment and said that both the countries are working together in emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing and Nuclear Fusion. Our country is merging talent and resources into the technologies of tomorrow.
Britain’s King also warned about environmental threats, saying the destruction of essential natural systems was a threat to long-term prosperity and security if ignored.
“Let us rededicate ourselves to each other,” he concluded by appealing to both countries to oppose inward-looking policies and strengthen their alliance.
America is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence. On such an occasion, Charles said that this is a milestone that reflects both historical differences and an enduring partnership.
At the same time, the main center of attraction among the exchange of gifts was the historical document, which connects the foundation of relations between the two countries to an important period of the 18th century. President Trump presented King Charles III with a custom copy of the letter dated June 2, 1785, written by John Adams to John Jay. In this letter, Adams described his meeting with King George III after the American Revolution.
In the letter, Adams said that Britain’s king, who was the last to agree to separation, was now expressing his desire to improve relations again. He indicated that he wanted to be the first to accept American friendship. This gift was a symbol of the fact that the parties who were rivals in the war are now moving towards becoming partners through diplomacy and this sentiment was visible in the programs of the entire day.
