Kolkata, July 23 (). To benefit thousands of people, including students and office goers, Kolkata Metro Railways will now run trains from 6 am instead of 6.50 am. For the convenience of those working late night and those using metro service after shows or events, the timing of the last train has also been extended from 9.44 pm to 10.30 pm.
These services will be available from Monday to Saturday from July 27, 2026 only on the most heavily used Blue and Green lines. A senior Metro Railway official said, “While this will put additional burden on the metro budget, there has also been a demand to extend metro timings both in the morning and evening. A lot of planning has gone into these decisions and we have taken all concerned into confidence. We are just hopeful that a large number of passengers will use these services.”
The official said that this decision to extend the time has been taken on an experimental basis and if a sufficient number of passengers are not found, it can be taken back.
The Blue Line – the country’s first metro link – runs between Garia in south Kolkata and Dakshineswar in the city’s north, while the Green Line connects Howrah Maidan in the west to Salt Lake Sector 5, considered the IT hub of eastern India.
The number of trains running every day (Monday to Friday) on the Blue Line will also be increased from 260 to 272. On Saturday, 258 trains will run instead of 246. On Sunday, 158 trains will run instead of the existing 152 trains.
236 trains will run on the Green Line between Monday and Friday instead of 228. On Saturday, 212 trains will run instead of the existing 204 trains. The number of trains will increase from 108 to 111 on Sunday. On Sunday, trains will run on both lines from 9 am to 10.30 pm.
With this move of Metro, the state government will also have to improve connectivity from stations to nearby places. Security will also have to be increased outside the stations, especially for women who will take the last trains, as some will reach their destination after 11.30 pm.
