According to the Hindu calendar, the month of Magha is considered very holy and auspicious. Bathing, charity, chanting and doing penance in this month provide special spiritual benefits. For this reason, every year a grand Magh Mela is organized in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh in the month of Magh. This fair held on the banks of Triveni Sangam (confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) is a wonderful confluence of faith and devotion. During Magh Mela, lakhs of devotees, sadhus, saints and Kalpavasis from India and abroad come to the Sangam for the holy bath. There is a religious belief that bathing in the Sangam in the month of Magh brings great virtue, freedom from sins and spiritual purification. In 2026, Magh Mela will start on January 3 and continue till February 15.

Main bathing dates of Magh Mela 2026

Although the entire month of Magh is considered auspicious for bathing and charity, there are some special dates during the Magh Mela that have great religious significance. This year, there will be six main bathing festivals during Magh Mela:

Six major baths during the 44 days of Magh Mela, Kalpavasis will spend 29 days in spiritual practice.
First main bath: Paush Purnima – January 3, 2026
Second main bath: Makar Sankranti – January 14, 2026
Third main bath: Mauni Amavasya – January 18, 2026
Fourth main bath: Basant Panchami – January 23, 2026
Fifth main bath: Maghi Purnima – February 1, 2026
Sixth Main Snan: Mahashivratri – February 15, 2026

Special significance of Mauni Amavasya
The most important and auspicious bath of Magh Mela is considered to be on the day of Mauni Amavasya. On this day, the largest crowd of devotees is seen on the banks of the Sangam. According to religious beliefs, taking a silent bath on Mauni Amavasya destroys sins, provides mental peace and opens the path to salvation. In 2026, this auspicious bath will be taken on 18th January.

Auspicious time for bathing in Magh Mela 2026

In Hinduism, Brahma Muhurta is considered the most auspicious time for bathing, charity and performing religious rituals. Brahma Muhurta is from 4:00 am to 5:30 am. Taking a dip in the Sangam at this time increases the benefits of the holy bath manifold. Devotees are advised to take a holy bath during this auspicious period.
