Bhopal . After a long gap of about 10 days, monsoon has once again become active in Madhya Pradesh. There was continuous rain in the capital Bhopal and surrounding areas since Monday night. The Bhopal center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of moderate rain with thunder and lightning in many districts of the state. According to IMD, there is a possibility of moderate rain with thunderstorms in Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ujjain, Mahakaleshwar, Agar Malwa, Rajgarh, Sehore, Shajapur, Dewas, Bhopal, Bairagarh, Nabibag, Raisen, Bhimbetka, Sanchi, Narmadapuram, Pachmarhi, Hoshangabad and Narsinghpur. In these areas, 5 to 15 mm of rainfall can occur per hour and the possibility of lightning falling from clouds to the ground has been estimated to be 30 to 60 percent. Vidisha, Udaygiri, Damoh, Panna, Satna, Chitrakoot, Rewa, Mauganj, Singrauli, Sidhi, Maihar, Katni, Umaria, Bandhavgarh, Dindori, Jabalpur, Bhedaghat, Mandla, Shahdol, Anuppur, Amarkantak, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, Betul, Pandhurna, Khandwa, Omkareshwar, Harda, Light rain with light thunder and lightning is expected in Burhanpur, Khargone, Maheshwar, Ratlam, Dholawad, Jhabua, Alirajpur, Dhar, Mandu, Indore, Barwani and Bawangaja. In these areas, there is a possibility of less than 5 mm rainfall per hour and the risk of lightning will be less than 30 percent.
According to the Meteorological Department, this rain is happening at a time when the state has recorded about 17 percent less rainfall than normal so far during this monsoon season. The rainfall deficiency in Eastern Madhya Pradesh has been 23 percent, while in Western Madhya Pradesh it has been 10 percent. Due to lack of heavy rain for the last 12 days, drought like situation started developing in many areas.
However, IMD estimates that there is a possibility of rain in about 90 percent parts of the state by July 25. This will provide moisture to the standing crops, improve the water level of the reservoirs and increase moisture in the soil for agricultural purposes.
The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain alert in view of waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruption, damage to weak structures and threat of lightning. People have been asked to stay away from water-logged areas and tall trees and drivers have been asked to exercise caution amid slippery conditions and low visibility. Farmers have also been advised to ensure protection of crops during inclement weather and avoid working in the open during heavy rains.
