Mumbai, July 8 (). Life has been badly affected due to continuous torrential rains in Mumbai. On Tuesday morning, the city was covered with dense clouds and strong winds continued to blow.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai in effect till Wednesday, warning of heavy rain and strong winds. According to the department, there will be intermittent rain in the city and suburbs and there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places.
In view of the severe rain situation, all government, private and municipal corporation-run schools and colleges of Mumbai remained closed on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. Due to incessant rain, life almost came to a standstill in Mumbai and surrounding areas on Monday. Many major roads of the city were submerged, due to which traffic was affected. Apart from this, incidents of uprooting of trees, falling of walls and hoardings were also reported at many places.
Heavy waterlogging continued in Vasai-Virar area of Palghar district since Monday morning. However, after the intensity of rain reduced in the evening, the water level gradually started decreasing and the situation improved somewhat.
Meanwhile, Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes that provides drinking water to Mumbai, overflowed around 9 pm on Tuesday night. Due to continuous heavy rains in the catchment area of the lake, the water level rose rapidly. This lake, with a useful water storage capacity of about 27.698 billion litres, supplies about 90 million liters of water per day. Last year it overflowed on August 18. Vihar Lake, built in 1859, is one of the smallest water supply lakes of Mumbai. When the lake overflows, the excess water is discharged into the Mithi River.
The rain also affected railway services. According to Western Railway, the first local train from Virar to Churchgate left at 3:57 am on Tuesday. However, according to passengers, Western Railway local trains were running late by an average of 20 to 25 minutes, while Central Railway services were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes. On the other hand, Mumbai Metro and ‘BEST’ bus services continued to operate normally.
According to Western Railway, Train No. 20908 Bhuj-Dadar Sayaji Nagari Express (July 7, 2026) has been short terminated at Gandhidham station. This train will not operate between Gandhidham and Dadar.
Apart from this, many trains running on July 8, 2026 have been completely canceled. These include 20907 Dadar-Bhuj Sayaji Nagari Express, 12934 Ahmedabad-Bandra Terminus Karnavati Express, 12933 Bandra Terminus-Ahmedabad Karnavati Express, 12932 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central AC Double Decker Express, 12931 Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad AC Double Decker Express, 82902 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Tejas Express and 82901 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Tejas Express, and 22962 Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express and 22961 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express.
Western Railway has appealed to the passengers to check the latest status of their train through NTES or Rail Madad (139) before starting the journey. Railways has also expressed regret to the passengers for this inconvenience.
The administration has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, follow the warnings of the Meteorological Department and stay away from waterlogged areas.
Meanwhile, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure said, “It is still raining heavily in the catchment area of the dam. Therefore, I appeal to all citizens living on the river banks to remain alert. The Municipal Corporation is fully prepared. Officers and staff have been deployed at various places on the river banks and we are constantly monitoring the situation.”
