Bengaluru. Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday issued a strong statement condemning the alleged role of police in the death of a student. The party described it as a tragic incident motivated by greed and abuse of power. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara denied the allegations and assured that they would gather information about the incident and ensure a thorough investigation. Regarding the incident, state BJP president and MLA BY Vijayendra said that an innocent and poor student, who had dreamed of building a better life through education despite difficulties, lost his life due to alleged harassment by police officials for demanding money.
He described the incident as ‘extremely painful and tragic’ and demanded immediate strict action from the state government against the senior police officers involved.
He also alleged that in the name of narcotics control, the police department took the life of an innocent person, and said that this situation reflected a serious deterioration in law and order in Karnataka.
He claimed that law enforcement agencies have stooped to such low levels where innocent people are being exploited and extorted.
According to Vijayendra, the deceased student has been identified as Aditya Mageri, who was a resident of Belur village in Bagalkot district and had come to Dharwad for education.
He alleged that the student was wrongly implicated in a narcotics-related case, and continued to be harassed for money even after medical reports confirmed his innocence.
He also claimed that despite knowing that the student was innocent, the police officials repeatedly demanded bribe through digital payment, which caused him deep mental distress.
Unable to bear the pressure, the student allegedly committed suicide.
Vijayendra said that the state government should take moral responsibility of this incident and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Home Minister G. Parameshwara and Director General of Police M.A. Demanded accountability from Salim.
He urged the State Government to ensure that such harassment of innocent persons does not happen again, and to take immediate legal action against those responsible, including senior officials.
He also demanded a compensation of at least Rs 50 lakh for the student’s bereaved family, and warned that failure to take action would show a lack of compassion on the part of the state government.
Responding to the BJP holding the Chief Minister and the Home Minister responsible for the alleged suicide of a student in a fake ganja case, G. Parameshwara said that the state government is responsible for the entire state, but it is not right to hold it responsible for every incident.
He said that obviously such allegations are made against us (state government). He said that he will collect complete information about this incident.
Minister Parameshwara said that why the student took such a step and who is responsible for it will be investigated. There is a meeting in the commissioner’s office today, after which I will talk about this matter.
This incident happened on 26 April. The deceased boy’s mother alleged that she had received a call from her son, in which he had asked her to deposit Rs 2,000 in her account so that he could give the money to the police and not get entangled in any drug-related case. She claimed that on April 26, she received another call and was told that her son had committed suicide.
