New Delhi, 20 September (). Portugal has announced that it will recognize Palestine as an independent country on Sunday (21 September). He will do this before the important meeting of the UN General Assembly to be held next week. Palestine is also expected to be recognized by about 10 other countries in the General Assembly.
Lisbon’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Portugal would officially recognize Palestine on Sunday. This has been said before the United Nations General Assembly, where about 10 other countries are going to do the same. Britain, Canada and France are among other Western countries that are planning to recognize the Palestinian State in this General Assembly. This decision has been taken at a time when Israel’s campaign against Hamas is going on in Gaza Strip.
Lisbon had announced in July itself that he intends to do so, giving ‘the situation’, ‘humanitarian crisis’, and Israel’s frequent threats on the west coast. A statement released on the website of the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The Ministry of External Affairs confirms that Portugal will recognize Palestine … The official announcement of recognition will be made on Sunday, September 21.”
Israel strongly criticized the Palestinian recognition plan and argued that it rewards Hamas for an inciting war in Gaza on 7 October 2023.
