Pradosh Vrat is considered an extremely auspicious and sacred fast dedicated to Lord Shiva. This fast is observed on the Trayodashi date of Shukla and Krishna Paksha of every month. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati as per the rituals on this day removes the troubles of life and brings happiness and prosperity.
According to religious beliefs, worshiping Lord Shiva during Pradosh Kaal i.e. at the time of sunset is considered extremely fruitful. It is said that the worship done at this time quickly pleases Lord Shiva and fulfills all the wishes of the devotees.
In Pradosh Vrat, not only the worship but also the recitation of its story has special importance. It is believed that the devotee who listens or reads the story of Pradosh Vrat with a true heart, gets the special blessings of Lord Shiva and the obstacles in life are removed.
According to the story, Lord Shiva protected his devotees after the conflict between the gods and demons during the Pradosh period and that is why this time is considered best for worshiping Shiva.
Devotees observe fast on this day and offer water, milk, belpatra and datura on Shivalinga. Besides, the mantra “Om Namah Shivay” is also specially chanted.
