Today is going to be a very decisive day in the politics of Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has called a special session of the Assembly at 11 am today. There is speculation that the government may present a floor test in the House today in view of the ‘threat of disintegration’ arising after the Rajya Sabha MPs joining the BJP. The party has issued a whip to all its MLAs to reach the Assembly to prevent any possible rebellion. According to sources, all the MLAs have been instructed to reach one hour before the start of the session. This step has been taken following reports which claimed that many MLAs and MPs were absent from the recent meeting held in Jalandhar.
Why is the government scared?
Clouds of crisis are looming over the government due to the following reasons:
Defection of MPs: The news of 6 Rajya Sabha MPs of AAP joining BJP has created panic within the party.
Opposition’s claims: Congress state president Raja Vading has claimed that 50 AAP MLAs may leave the party. At the same time, Bikram Singh Majithia is also continuously talking about the big disunity in the party.
Mathematics of numerical strength: It is discussed that 30 to 35 MLAs are in contact with Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, due to which questions are being raised on the stability of the government.
floor test strategy
If the government proves its majority in the House today, then as per the rules of the Assembly, it will get protection from no-confidence motion for the next 6 months. However, if a large faction of MLAs walks away, the Governor can order a fresh floor test. Legislative business such as increasing the minimum wage has also been put on the agenda during the session.
