Chandigarh. Amid tight security arrangements to ensure peaceful celebration of Republic Day in Punjab, the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) of Amritsar has foiled a major terrorist attack. The attack was to be carried out on a security establishment by a terrorist module associated with the banned terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Friday that the SSOC averted the attack in time by arresting a terrorist involved in the conspiracy. He said that this action has been taken under the increased security arrangements on the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The accused has been identified as Sharanpreet Singh, a resident of Dinewal village in Tarn Taran district. Police teams have recovered one P86 hand grenade, one 9 mm Glock pistol, five cartridges and 65 grams of ICE (narcotic substance) from him. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused was working on the instructions of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorists sitting abroad Nishan Singh alias Nishan Jauriyan, Aadeshbir Singh alias Aadesh Jamrai and Simranjeet Singh alias Simma Deol. These terrorists were continuously conspiring to create an atmosphere of panic and fear in Punjab.
DGP said that investigation is going on in this matter to investigate the network. Giving information about the operation, SSOC Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Sukhminder Singh Mann said that based on intelligence, Amritsar teams arrested Sharanpreet Singh near Bundala turn on Amritsar-Taran Taran highway. Glock pistol, cartridges and 65 grams of ICE drug were recovered from him.
During sustained interrogation, the accused revealed that recently his handlers had given him a hand grenade, which he had hidden near a church on the Amritsar-Taran Taran Highway. On the instructions of the accused, the police reached the spot and recovered a P86 hand grenade.
AIG said that investigation has also revealed that accused Sharanpreet Singh was connected to this terrorist network through his cousin Simma Deol. He said, “The accused was working on the instructions of his masters to deliver consignments of explosive materials, weapons and handling illegal money.”
