UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has given a message of peace, compassion and solidarity on the occasion of Ramadan, amid ongoing war, displacement and humanitarian crisis around the world. Expressing concern over the global situation, he said that even today a large part of the human family is forced to live under the shadow of fear, hunger and insecurity. The UN chief said: “For Muslims around the world, the holy month of Ramadan is a sacred time of reflection and worship. Ramadan also symbolizes a higher ideal of hope and peace.” “But for many members of the human family, this ideal remains a distant dream. From Afghanistan to Yemen, Gaza to Sudan and beyond – people face war, hunger, displacement, discrimination and much more.” The enduring message of Ramadan becomes even more relevant in today’s difficult and divided times. The UN chief appealed for unity in these difficult and divided times, to bridge divisions, to bring help and hope to those who are suffering, and to defend the rights and dignity of every person. Drawing on his personal experience, he said, “Each year, I specifically call for solidarity with a Muslim community. And every time, the spirit of peace and compassion of Ramadan reassures and inspires me.” He appealed to people around the world to move forward together for peace and justice: “I wish that this holy month inspires us to unite and work towards building a more peaceful, generous and just world for all people.”
