Jammu . Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in the Assembly on Wednesday that his government has given priority to the security of religious places. At the same time, security is most important for the return of Kashmiri Pandits to their native places. The Chief Minister told the Assembly that while the government continues to give priority to the restoration of their religious places, the key to the return of displaced Kashmiri Pandits to their native places depends on the security environment. Omar Abdullah was speaking during the discussion on a question from a member of the House. He said that the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits is a truth which neither the government nor anyone else denies. He said that previous governments have made efforts to facilitate their return, but the situation on the ground has not yet reached a level where community members feel safe enough to return.
The Chief Minister said that the community’s sense of security has been deeply affected and it is necessary to rebuild it before any meaningful return can be made.
He said that without restoring that trust, it would not be realistic to expect their return.
The CM said the government is taking steps to protect the properties of the displaced community, adding that religious places associated with them remain a priority and they are being conserved and protected.
Referring to earlier legislative efforts, he said attempts had been made in the past to introduce a bill to protect such properties, but there had been opposition from some sections of the community.
He said any future legislation must have broad consensus to avoid division. The Government is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of the displaced community and is working towards creating conditions that will enable their safe and dignified return.
