New Delhi. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday that 98.47 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have been returned. This figure has come out almost three years after the announcement of removal of notes from circulation. The central bank had decided to remove Rs 2000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, which was part of its currency management process. At that time the total value of these notes was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. According to the latest data, it has come down to only Rs 5,451 crore by April 30, 2026.
RBI said, “When the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes was announced on May 19, 2023, their total value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore, which has now come down to Rs 5,451 crore.”
RBI said in its statement, “Thus, till May 19, 2023, 98.47 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation have been returned.”
After the announcement of withdrawal of notes, the facility of exchange of Rs 2000 notes has been provided in 19 issue offices of RBI across the country.
From October 9, 2023, the facility to deposit these notes in the bank account was also started in these offices.
The central bank also said that people can still send Rs 2000 notes through India Post from any post office in the country to the issue office of RBI, so that they can be deposited in their bank accounts.
“Individuals and institutions can deposit Rs 2,000 notes into their bank accounts at the RBI issue offices from October 9, 2023,” RBI said.
The central bank further said that apart from this, people are sending Rs 2000 notes through India Post from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI and depositing them in their accounts.
RBI also clarified that despite being removed from circulation, Rs 2000 notes still remain legal tender.
