Was your PAN card issued before October 1, 2024? Have you linked your PAN and Aadhar card? If not, this carelessness can cost you very dearly. Today, December 31, is the last date to link PAN and Aadhaar, and it is best to complete this important task, otherwise your PAN card may become invalid. It can be deactivated, rendering it useless. Without this, you may have to face many financial difficulties.
Important for these PAN card holders:
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhaar card under Indian tax laws. However, please note that the deadline of December 31, 2025 for this work is applicable only to those PAN card holders whose PAN cards were issued using their Aadhaar number before October 1, 2024. The Income Tax Department had issued a notification in this regard on April 3, 2025, in which it was said that such users will have to complete the PAN-Aadhaar linking process by the last day of this year.
PAN card useless from January 1!
If you have not linked your PAN and Aadhaar, leave everything else and do this important thing immediately. Otherwise, your PAN card may be deactivated from January 1, 2026, the first day of the New Year. After that, you will not be able to use it for any financial transaction. It is important to note that using an inoperative PAN card is illegal under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, and can attract a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
Other problems include not being able to do important things like financial transactions, opening bank accounts and filing ITR due to deactivated PAN. Services may be suspended by mutual funds and brokers due to KYC related issues. You may also face problems like delay in refund and excess tax deducted at source.
