Washington. US President Donald Trump strongly criticized NATO and America’s key allies for not supporting America’s military campaign against Iran. The US President called this alliance a paper tiger. Trump said, “NATO is a paper tiger. The alliance failed to step up during the war.” He said that the allied countries crossed their limits in not helping and also refused to provide logistical support. They didn’t even want to give us a landing strip. Trump also included countries like Japan, South Korea and Australia in his criticism. “Japan didn’t help us, Australia didn’t help us, South Korea didn’t help us,” he said.
He said that America alone has borne the burden of the war. He emphasized America’s dominance among allies, saying, “NATO is us.”
The comments reflect growing tensions between the US and its allies amid escalating conflict with Iran.
According to The Wall Street Journal, many US partners view Washington’s approach as unpredictable and are hesitant to join the fight despite relying on US security guarantees.
The conflict has left the allies in a dilemma as energy disruptions and economic losses mount, the report said. Trump also criticized the attitude of his European allies, saying they had refused to participate despite long-standing ties.
The lack of involvement by allies is a departure from previous US-led wars, where coalition support was a key component.
“I have to tell you, I am very disappointed in NATO. I think this is a stain on NATO that will never go away,” Trump said in response to a question.
Trump said, “We went to NATO. I didn’t ask very hard. I just said, if you want to help, great, then they said ‘No, no no, we won’t help’. I said, no problem. I’ve always said NATO is a paper tiger.”
The US President said, “Putin is not afraid of NATO. Putin is afraid of us, very afraid. He himself has told me this many times. I have got to know him very well. NATO is a paper tiger. They really went out of their way to not help. They did not even want to give us a landing strip.”
President Donald Trump said, “Just think. It’s not just NATO. You know who else hasn’t helped us? South Korea, Australia and Japan. We have 50,000 troops in Japan to protect them from North Korea. We have 45,000 troops in South Korea to protect them from Kim Jong Un, who I get along very well with, as you know.”
