The year 2025 should be remembered as a historic chapter in India’s space journey. ISRO has not only made huge technological leaps but has also achieved many milestones that have put India on the world map. Let us know about the major achievements made by India in the space sector in 2025.
India made its first in-space docking
ISRO started the year with a breakthrough that changed India’s human spaceflight roadmap. On January 16, 2025, ISRO successfully completed SpaDeX by docking two satellites, SDX-01 and SDX-02, in orbit. This achievement made India the fourth country in the world to demonstrate autonomous docking capability. This technology is very important for future missions.
Sriharikota completes 100 rocket launches with GSLV-F15
Just weeks after these space dockings, India achieved another milestone on January 29, 2025. ISRO conducted its 100th launch from Sriharikota Spaceport. In this mission, navigation satellite NVS-02 was carried on GSLV-F15 rocket. However, due to a malfunction in the orbit raising motor, the satellite could not be placed in its intended orbit.
NASA and ISRO launch NISAR
A major achievement in the space sector was achieved when NASA and ISRO together launched the NISAR mission. It is the world’s first star imaging satellite, which uses dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar. NISAR will precisely track changes in the Earth’s surface, including monitoring glaciers, earthquakes, volcanoes and climate disturbances.
Aditya L1 shares 15 TB solar science data with the world
India’s first solar observatory, Aditya L1, reached full scientific operations at the Sun-Earth L1 point. In 2025, ISRO releases 15 terabytes of mission data to researchers around the world. This data includes high-resolution observations of solar flares, coronal mass ejections, solar winds, and magnetic storms.
Breakthroughs in engine technology
India has also made significant advances in the engines that will power the next generation of rockets. On March 28, 2025, ISRO successfully hot tested the SE2000 semi-cryogenic engine. This is a big step towards replacing aging engines with more powerful, cleaner and economical systems.
Shubhanshu Shukla becomes the first Indian to reach the International Space Station
The biggest achievement of the year came when Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station. Traveling as part of the Axiom-4 mission, he spent nearly 18 days aboard the International Space Station, conducting microgravity experiments and leading India to the world’s most famous space laboratory.
