39% jump in India's smartphone exports in August 2025

Smartphone Exports Jump 39%: India’s smartphone exports performed brilliantly in August 2025. According to India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), exports increased by 39 percent to about $ 1.53 billion on an annual basis. It was $ 1.09 billion in August last year. Exports, especially in the US, saw a speed of 148 percent, which increased from $ 38.8 million to $ 96.5 million.

Icea, which represents the large industry companies, denied the decline in exports in some reports. The organization said that the conclusions based on monthly comparisons could be misleading.

Export broke records to America

Smartphone exports to the US reached $ 8.43 billion in the first five months (April-August) of FY 2025-26, which is about three times more than $ 2.88 billion in the same period last financial year. The figure is about 80 percent of the US exports ($ 10.56 billion) of the entire financial year 2024-25.

According to the canalis report, in April-June 2025, India defeated China and gained 44 percent stake in exports to the US, which was 13 percent last year.

Icea chairman’s statement, avoid monthly comparison

Icea Chairman Pankaj Mohindero said, “Every export sector has its own characteristics. Simplification of business figures, especially on monthly comparisons, may be misleading. It is necessary to consult experts.”

He clarified that August and September are the lowest months of smartphones exports. The figures of the last five years show that these months are usually weak.

Why is export in August-September?

– Companies launch new models in the end of September and October, which global customers wait.
– Shopping for old models falls in August.
– Retrophiting for new models in the plant reduces production.
-Production for the domestic market is diverted before festivals, which reaches the peak in September-October. This keeps the exports low till October.

Record increase in total exports

In April-August 2025, the total smartphone exports reached Rs 1 lakh crore (about Rs 11.7 billion), which is 55 percent higher than the previous year’s $ 7.6 billion. The Icea said that smartphone exports have been the fastest growing sector in India in the last five years under the PLI scheme. FY15 became the largest export in FY25 from 167th place.
