Are paper notes of Rs 100, 200 and 500 going to be banned? RBI made disclosure amid news of plastic currency

The country is preparing to introduce plastic currency notes. After the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, the RBI Governor said that the idea is still in the initial stage. Plastic notes – usually made from very strong ‘polymers’ – are already in use in many countries around the world; These are better in terms of security features and strength. It is expected that India will also bring such notes in future. Meanwhile, rumors are spreading on social media that with the introduction of plastic notes, the currently used paper notes – i.e. the notes kept in your pockets and wallets – will be discontinued. Of course, this begs the question: are paper currency notes really being phased out? Press Information Bureau (PIB), working on behalf of RBI, has given clarification on this and said that the information going viral is completely wrong.

**PIB told the truth on behalf of RBI**
RBI has been mentioned in misleading posts on social media. The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has advised people to be cautious of these claims. The government agency has made it clear that the viral news of banning paper currency is completely wrong. Terming the viral claim false, PIB Fact Check said, “Some posts on social media claim that RBI is planning to withdraw paper notes and replace them with plastic currency notes from June 30, 2026.” PIB has termed this claim as completely false and said that RBI has no such plan; Neither any step is being taken to withdraw paper notes nor any announcement has been made to replace them with plastic notes. PIB has appealed to the people to verify it on the official website of RBI before relying on such information.

**What is the update about plastic notes?**

Plastic notes may come into use in the country in future. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has said that the Reserve Bank is considering issuing plastic currency notes in the country; However, no final decision has been taken yet. There were many reports in the media and social media about the preparations for plastic notes, and the Governor admitted that there was truth in the reports about polymer notes. However, he said, “The Reserve Bank has not reached any conclusion yet. RBI is still reviewing its pros and cons.” He further said, “The Central Bank is examining whether it would really be beneficial to implement it in the country or not. This scheme is still in the initial stage and information will be given as soon as any major decision is taken.”
