The central government has decided to investigate the new Username feature of WhatsApp. This feature has recently been introduced by Meta, through which users will be able to chat with new people only through username without sharing their mobile number. The government will review the security, privacy and regulatory aspects of this feature.
Conversation will happen without sharing number
Under the new feature of WhatsApp, users will be able to create a unique username. After this there will be no need to share mobile number to start a conversation with a new person. With this, the privacy of users is expected to be more secure than before.
Username booking started from June 29
Meta has started booking WhatsApp usernames worldwide from June 29. However, this facility will not be made available to all users simultaneously. The company will bring it to users in different countries in the coming few months in a phased manner (phasewise rollout). When this feature is available in any region, the concerned user will be informed about it through a notification within the WhatsApp app.
Those who book first will get benefit
Millions of users around the world would like to choose the same or similar username. In such a situation, those who reserve their preferred username first will have more chances of getting their desired username.
Government will review the feature
According to sources, the central government will study this new feature to ensure that it is in accordance with Indian laws, digital security standards and rules related to user privacy. At present, no detailed official statement has been issued by the government in this regard. This new feature of WhatsApp is being considered a big change for the users in terms of both privacy and convenience. However, everyone will be keeping an eye on the government’s review and phased rollout before its widespread use.
