For the last few days, there has been a rise in the prices of both gold and silver. There has been no fall in the prices of these precious metals in the market. In fact, new records are being made every day. Silver prices have reached an all-time high, while gold prices are also rapidly touching new peaks. Today, on October 14, 2025, 24 carat gold is being sold at ₹ 12,883 per gram in the major bullion markets of the country. Despite its high price, India is known throughout the world for its love for gold. Do you know how much gold does India have and where is gold still mined in the country? Let’s find out.
How much gold does India have?
According to the 2025 report of the Reserve Bank of India, there is a total of 879.58 metric tons of gold in the country. Out of this, 511.99 tonnes of gold is in the country, while about 348.62 tonnes of gold is kept abroad (such as with the Bank of England and Bank for International Settlements). Due to the high price of gold at the international level, the price of this gold is continuously increasing. The devaluation of the rupee has also further increased its value.
India’s only gold mine
Although India is one of the world’s top gold buyers, its share in gold production is very small. There are only a few active gold mines in India, of which the Hatti Gold Mines in Karnataka is the largest and oldest. Located in Raichur district, this mine produces about 1,700 kg of gold annually. The state government is planning to increase its production to 5,000 kg per year in the next one and a half years. Hatti Gold Mines is operated by the Government of Karnataka and is India’s only large operational gold mining unit.
Which was the second largest gold mine?
Additionally, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) was once India’s largest gold mine, but it was closed in 2001. The government is now working on a new plan to extract gold from its old tailings (debris left after mining). Reports suggest that the KGF tailings contain approximately 32 million tonnes of material, which still contains gold. If processing is done using modern technology, about 700 to 750 kg of gold can be extracted annually.
Which other district has gold mines?
States like Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh also have gold mines in the exploration stage or about to start. Gold reserves have been identified in Bhukiya-Jagpura block of Banswara district of Rajasthan. Limited quantity of gold mining is also going on in Kunderkocha area of Jharkhand.
