This information has come to light from the data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday. Statistics show that during this period there was a sharp increase in imports, while limited growth was seen in exports.
Commodity export and import status
According to the ministry, merchandise exports increased by 1.88 percent to $38.51 billion in December 2025. At the same time, an increase of 8.67 percent was recorded in commodity imports and it reached 63.55 billion dollars.
A year ago, commodity imports in December 2024 were $58.43 billion. The trade deficit further increased due to the sharp increase in imports.
decline in services business
This time a slight decline was seen in the services sector. Services exports declined to $35.50 billion in December 2025, compared to $36.97 billion a year ago. Import of services also declined from $17.80 billion to $17.38 billion.
Total export-import and trade deficit
Total exports, including goods and services, stood at $74.01 billion, while total imports reached $80.94 billion. In this way, there was a decline in exports and increase in imports on an annual basis.
As a result, the total trade deficit increased from $1.46 billion in December 2024 to $6.92 billion in December 2025.
Government statement and further estimates
Rajesh Aggarwal, Commerce Secretary said that despite global uncertainties, India’s merchandise exports increased by 1.87 percent to $38.5 billion in December. He said that the trade deficit in the month under review was about 25 billion US dollars.
Aggarwal expressed hope that the total export of goods and services could exceed $ 850 billion in the current financial year 2025-26.
