After talks between the US and Iran ended inconclusively and Donald Trump threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, crude oil prices have once again crossed $100. However, it is a matter of relief for India that even today the government oil marketing companies have not made any change in the prices of petrol and diesel.
crude oil prices
Both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) saw their prices rise by around 8%, taking the prices to once again cross the $100 per barrel level. WTI prices reached as high as $105, while Brent crude hit a high of $102.39 per barrel during early trading. Today in Delhi petrol is being sold at ₹ 94.77 per liter and diesel at ₹ 87.67 per liter. At the same time, in Kolkata, petrol is being sold at ₹ 104.99 per liter and diesel at ₹ 91.81 per liter. Compared to Delhi, the price of a liter of petrol in West Bengal is about ₹10 higher. The cheapest fuel in India is found in Port Blair, where petrol costs ₹82.46 per liter and diesel costs ₹78.05 per litre.
Steps taken by the government
To ensure that there is no shortage of petrol and diesel in the domestic market, the government has tightened controls on exports. On April 11, the government increased export duty on diesel to ₹55.50 per liter and on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to ₹42 per litre, to ensure easy availability of these products in the domestic market.
The government has acknowledged the unusual rise in crude oil prices due to pressure on global markets and the crisis in the Middle East; However, the government has also said that steps have been taken to protect consumers from these impacts. According to an official statement, the Government of India has reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per liter specifically to protect the interests of consumers.
