When the conflict between America and Iran started in February, the entire world including India faced shortage of oil and gas. When the ceasefire was announced, everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Now that tensions have increased again, the situation has become the same as before and concerns have arisen again regarding the supply of cooking gas (LPG).
Question on LPG supply
India meets most of its LPG requirements from abroad, and up to 90% of the supply comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, India had faced severe gas shortage in March, April and May after the conflict between the two countries started, forcing people to wait for months for cylinders and stand in long lines outside gas agencies. If the situation is equally serious this time too, then gas cylinder prices may increase again. The situation has become more difficult because oil companies have already suffered huge losses due to interruption in gas supply.
According to government data, state-owned oil companies were facing a loss of ₹500 to ₹700 on every domestic LPG cylinder by June 2026. If international crude oil prices rise again and remain high for long, the government will have two options: either increase subsidies or increase cylinder prices.
