A big sports project is being planned in the national capital Delhi. According to top sources of the Sports Ministry, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be demolished and a new ‘Sports City’ will be built in its place. This project will be spread over a large area of 102 acres. Modern sports models used in countries like Qatar and Australia are being assessed for the construction of this new sports city. The objective of this project is to create a state-of-the-art sports infrastructure in Delhi as per international standards.
According to sources, the land on which Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is currently built will be completely developed. The new sports city will be spread over 102 acres, making it one of the major sports facilities in the country. The objective of this project is to establish an integrated and modern center dedicated to sports. To make the new Sports City world-class, Sports Ministry teams are intensively studying the successful sports models existing in Qatar and Australia. The design and features will be finalized by learning from these international models.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was built for the 1982 Asian Games and was later renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It has long been one of the most famous multi-sports venues in India. Big athletics events, football matches, big concerts and national celebrations, including Independence Day events, have been organized in this stadium with a capacity of about 60 thousand people. This stadium has historically been the home venue of the national athletics team and has held an important place in India’s sporting history for more than four decades. Earlier this year, the World Para Athletics Championships were held at the JLN Stadium in New Delhi. A Mondo track was laid for this event, which cost around Rs 30 crore.
