The year 2026 is just a few days away. Along with this, the calendar of bank holidays has also been released. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the list of bank holidays for the year 2026. According to this list, banks will remain closed for a total of 16 days in January 2026. These holidays will not be celebrated simultaneously in the entire country. Holidays will vary from state to state. So, if you are planning to do any banking transaction in January, do check the list of bank holidays in your city.

In January 2026, public and private sector banks will remain closed on various festivals and special occasions. These holidays include New Year’s Day, Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Bihu, Makar Sankranti, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti and Republic Day. In some states, banks may remain closed for two or three consecutive days due to these holidays. Apart from this, banks will also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month and every Sunday.

Bank Holidays in January 2026
1 January: New Year’s Day / Gaan-Nagai (This holiday will be celebrated in Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, Shillong).
January 2: New Year Celebration / Mannam Jayanti (This holiday will be celebrated in Aizawl, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram).
January 3: Hazrat Ali’s Birthday (this holiday will be celebrated in Kanpur and Lucknow).
12 January: Swami Vivekananda Jayanti (this holiday will be celebrated in Kolkata).
January 14: Makar Sankranti / Magh Bihu (This holiday will be celebrated in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Itanagar).
January 15: Uttarayan Punyakal / Pongal / Maghi Sankranti (This holiday will be celebrated in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Vijayawada).
16 January: Thiruvalluvar Day (this holiday will be celebrated in Chennai).
17 January: Uzhavar Thirunal (This holiday will be celebrated in Chennai).

23 January: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti / Saraswati Puja / Basant Panchami (this holiday will be celebrated in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata).
26 January: Republic Day (This holiday will be celebrated throughout the country including Mumbai).

6 weekend holidays
There will also be 6 weekend holidays in January. These include four Sundays and two Saturdays. Banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Despite bank closure, you will be able to use digital banking services. Services like UPI, mobile banking and internet banking will remain operational, so that you will be able to do financial transactions easily.
