Stock markets are closed every Saturday and Sunday, but also on some public holidays including Diwali. Like other establishments in the country, trading on BSE and NSE will also remain closed on this festival. However, the stock markets will remain open for a shorter period of time for muhurat trading. Due to Diwali holidays, stock markets will remain closed for four days in the week starting October 20. The holiday dates are as follows:
21 October: Tuesday – Diwali/Lakshmi Puja
22 October: Wednesday – Diwali Balipratipada
October 25: Saturday
October 26: Sunday
On October 21 and 22, there will be a trading holiday for Equity Segment, Equity Derivatives Segment, SLB Segment, Currency Derivatives Segment, NDS-RST, Tri-Party Repo, Commodity Derivatives Segment and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) Segment on BSE. On both dates, there will be a holiday at NSE across all sectors: equities, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, corporate bonds, new loan segments, negotiated trade reporting platforms, mutual funds, securities lending and borrowing schemes, currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives. Multi Commodity Exchange will also observe holiday on October 21 and 22 on the occasion of Diwali.
When will Muhurta trading happen?
Muhurat trading session on Diwali will be held on October 21, 2025 on NSE and BSE. The time is from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, i.e. for one hour. Additionally, there will be a pre-open session from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm, allowing traders to prepare for trading. This Muhurta trading session is considered an auspicious opportunity for investors. The tradition of Muhurta trading has been going on for many years. Investors see this as an opportunity to bring prosperity and success to their portfolio. Thirteen times out of the last 16 years, both the Sensex and Nifty have closed with gains during this particular session. During the Muhurta trading session of Diwali 2024, Sensex closed 335.06 points higher at 79,724.12 and Nifty closed 99 points higher at 24,304.35.
On what other dates will the stock market remain closed in the rest of the year?
After Diwali, for the rest of 2025, stock markets will remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays, including Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 5 and Christmas on December 25. On Friday, October 10, the stock market closed with gains for the second consecutive day. The Sensex closed at 82,500.82, up 328.72 points or 0.40 per cent. Nifty closed at 25,285.35 with a gain of 103.55 points or 0.41 per cent.
