This year, Diwali will be celebrated in India on 20 October 2025 (Monday), but there will be no holiday in the stock market on this day. That is, normal trading on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will continue from 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Why will there be no holiday on Diwali?
Actually, the holiday dates of NSE and BSE have been determined differently. For this reason, the stock market will remain closed on 21st and 22nd October (Tuesday and Wednesday). These days are celebrated as Lakshmi Puja and Balipratipada, for which there will be a holiday in the markets.
Muhurat Trading: A Special Trading Session
On the day of Diwali, a special trading session is organized, called Muhurat trading. This session lasts for one hour and is celebrated as the beginning of Samvat 2082. However, the purpose of this session is to wish auspiciousness and prosperity for the investors and not to make profits.
On this day, investors traditionally initiate new investments, and the BSE and NSE open their terminals, even though the markets are closed for the rest of the day.
Tips for investors
During muhurat trading, market liquidity may be low, and spreads may be wide, making it not suitable for large speculative transactions. Additionally, market volatility may increase after and before Diwali, so investors are advised to take decisions carefully.
