As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are approaching, airfares for flights from Delhi to Kolkata are seeing a steep increase. The main reason for this is that many people living in Delhi are returning to their hometowns to cast their votes, which has led to a sudden surge in the demand for tickets. As a result, people who are booking tickets at the last minute are having to pay much higher fares. Regarding the elections, the Election Commission of India is conducting voting for the 294-seat assembly in two main phases. Voting is scheduled to take place on April 23 and April 29, while the results will be declared on May 4, 2026.
Why have flight ticket prices increased?
The biggest reason behind the increase in prices of flights from Delhi to Kolkata is the sudden surge in demand. Generally, the fare for this route ranges between ₹5,000 to ₹7,000. However, due to the elections, a large number of people are returning to their home towns. In such circumstances, airlines increase fares in response to increased demand. Precisely because of this, ticket prices have become more expensive than usual.
today’s flight fares
The huge increase in fares for flights from Delhi to Kolkata can be clearly seen. Today—April 23—the price of a non-stop flight ticket has reached almost ₹32,000. At the same time, the fare of some other flights has increased to ₹ 36,000. Overall, ticket prices are very high at present, which is putting a huge burden on the pockets of passengers.
Fares for April 24th
There has been a huge increase in flight fares since the very first day of the elections. As on April 24, ticket prices remain around ₹13,000 to ₹24,000. However, fares for some non-stop flights are reaching up to ₹32,000. Overall, prices still remain high due to heavy demand.
Prices will remain high next week also
The second phase of voting in West Bengal is to be held on April 29, so it is becoming difficult to get flight tickets at affordable rates for April 28—that is, just a day before that. On this day, fares for flights from Delhi to Kolkata have increased to around ₹15,000, although it still remains around ₹13,000 for some flights.
