Despite all efforts to resolve it, the crisis continues in Indigo Airlines. Flight cancellations continue, and the aviation regulator (DGCA) is also increasing its investigation. In the latest development, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has taken a major step against the airline, reducing the approved increase in IndiGo’s winter schedule and directing it to reduce flights by 5%. A report quoting officials also said that the ministry is considering the possibility of imposing a hefty fine of up to ₹1,000 crore on IndiGo Airlines.
Consideration of forming an investigation committee
A report by Informist published on Business Today states that the Civil Aviation Ministry is likely to set up a parliamentary committee to probe the recent flight cancellations and delays by IndiGo across the country. It was told that the proposed committee will investigate the root causes of this crisis and may also recommend possible punitive and penalty action against the airline. A ministry official close to the matter was quoted as saying that the government is considering all possibilities, and any action must withstand legal scrutiny.
IndiGo likely to face heavy fine!
The official further said that it is clear that Indigo Airlines will have to face such fine in the court. He speculated that the ministry was considering the possibility of imposing a hefty fine of up to ₹1,000 crore (US$111.8 million) on IndiGo. Meanwhile, the IndiGo flight crisis shows no signs of abating, and passengers are nervous.
4500 flights cancelled, ₹750 crore refunded
Looking at the latest data of IndiGo flight cancellations, more than 4,500 IndiGo flights have been canceled in a week, and cancellations are continuing. Reportedly 500 flights were canceled on Tuesday. Aviation Minister K. Following Ram Mohan Naidu’s announcement, the airline’s winter schedule has been reduced by 5 percent. So far, amid this crisis, the airline has issued ticket refunds worth ₹745 crore.
76 flights canceled in Delhi, 180 on Bengaluru route
According to reports, on Tuesday, the eighth day of the crisis, 76 departure and arrival flights of IndiGo were canceled in Delhi, taking the total number of cancellations to 152. Indigo has also canceled about 180 flights from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The airline is not operating 58 flights from Hyderabad, which includes 14 incoming and 44 outgoing flights. So far, 31 Indigo flights have been canceled in Mumbai, which includes 14 incoming and 17 outgoing flights.
