'Change your thinking', whom did CJI DY Chandrachud give advice to, said a big thing

Madurai (Tamil Nadu). Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is known for his outspoken opinions and advocacy of legal reform. In a program organized on the occasion of the 20th foundation year of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, he has once again strongly advocated for reform in the legal profession. He said that by paying a salary of just Rs 5000 to junior lawyers, they are expected to work hard and for a long time. He has advised senior lawyers to give up this kind of patriarchal (thinking of limiting the other person and advancing one’s own interests) mindset. CJI Chandrachud on Saturday asked senior advocates to give up this kind of thinking towards junior lawyers. The CJI also said that paying less money to junior lawyers reduces their enthusiasm to join the profession.

After inaugurating the 20th foundation year celebrations of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, the CJI appreciated the contribution of the bench in acting as a repository of data and software content for the Delhi High Court. Raising the issue of very low salaries being paid to junior lawyers who are starting their legal career, CJI Chandrachud said, “Please leave the patriarchal thinking that they have come to learn, get opportunities, gain experience and you are guiding them.” The CJI further said that a lot can be learnt from junior lawyers. Paying junior lawyers a low amount like Rs 5,000 per month as salary reduces their enthusiasm to join the legal profession.

Salary should be given according to hard work- CJI Chandrachud
CJI Chandrachud said that junior lawyers are particularly more aware of the current realities. He said that junior lawyers should get a respectable salary in accordance with their hard work. The CJI further said that without adequate salary, they are expected to work long hours with less comfort and less remuneration. Let us tell you that usually law graduates are given a lot of salary in the beginning. Senior lawyers take full work from them, but they are paid very less money in comparison to that.

Many judges of the Supreme Court were present
Appreciating the achievement of the Madurai Bench, CJI Chandrachud said that the Delhi High Court has established a disaster relief center in the Madurai Bench this year to keep a regular record of its data and software. Let us tell you that the CJI inaugurated the Viganitennial Stupa through video conference. Supreme Court judges Justice BR Gavai, Justice Suryakant, Justice MM Sundaresh, Justice KV Vishwanathan and Justice R Mahadevan also attended the ceremony held at Tamukkam Maidan here.
