National Civil Service Day 2022: April 21 is celebrated as National Civil Service Day in India (Civil Service Day 2022). The day is observed to remember the efforts of civil servants of all departments and those who work tirelessly for the smooth running of the administrative machinery.
National Civil Services Day: History
The Government of India celebrates 21st April every year as National Civil Services Day. This day was first celebrated in the year 2006 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. On this day, the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration is presented to civil servants for their contribution to the service of the nation and the people.
Why is it celebrated only on 21st April?
The Government of India has chosen 21st April as the day to celebrate National Civil Services Day because on this day India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the newly formed and newly appointed Administrative Service officers. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed these officers in 1947 at the Metcalf House in New Delhi.

The day is dedicated to remember all those involved and working in various levels and departments in the civil services. Bureaucracy is an important part of the governance system and hence it is of great importance in the day to day functioning of the country.
Father of Indian Civil Service
Charles Cornwallis is known as the father of the Indian Civil Service for his contribution to the reform and modernization of civil services in the country. Civil service in our country includes Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service and All India Services and a comprehensive list of Central Service Groups A and B.
