NEET UG exam is scheduled to be held again on June 21. Regarding this examination, the Supreme Court has rejected a petition, which requested to conduct the examination in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode instead of the traditional pen-and-paper format. This petition was filed by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh. The Supreme Court had termed such a change in the examination format for the current year as impractical. However, on repeated requests by the petitioner, the Court said it has scheduled the hearing of other petitions related to NEET in July. This petition will also be heard along with him.
The petitioner, Sudhakar Singh, approached Justice P.S. seeking various reliefs regarding the NEET exam. Narasimha and appeared before the bench comprising Justice Arvind Kumar; However, today he mainly stressed on the demand to conduct the examination only in CBT mode. His lawyer said in the court, “Today, I am insisting on only one appeal: that the examination be conducted in CBT mode.”
Responding to this demand, Justice Narasimha remarked that similar appeals had been made earlier and had already been rejected by the Court. The bench underlined the logistical challenges and difficulties faced by the examination authorities in conducting the examination. Justice Narasimha said that at this stage, the question of granting such relief does not arise. He said officials are already facing many challenges.
Justice Narasimha remarked, “You are aware of the difficulties we are currently facing. The examination was cancelled, and is now being re-conducted.” He noted the immense pressure currently being placed on officials and reiterated that similar demands had been rejected in the past. When the counsel reiterated that he was exclusively advocating for a CBT-based examination, the Court said that the matter could not be taken up for urgent hearing. Justice Narasimha remarked, “We will hear the matter after the holidays.” Subsequently, the Court listed this particular demand for hearing along with other pending petitions.
